Lewisburg Historic District

Lewisburg, WV

History

A walkable downtown of brick and stone buildings, independent shops and galleries in the Greenbrier Valley. Park near the main street, wander the side lanes, and plan a lunch stop before continuing on I-64.

Lewisburg was established in 1782 by the Virginia assembly and is named for Andrew Lewis, who set up a camp at a spring in 1751. The city is the county seat of Greenbrier County; 3,922 people lived here in 2020. In 1978 an area of 95 hectares (236 acres) in the center was designated a National Register Historic District. The Battle of Lewisburg was fought here in 1862 during the Civil War, and bullet marks can still be seen on some buildings.

Sights include the North House Museum, a building from 1820 that the Greenbrier Historical Society has run since 1976, and Carnegie Hall, built in 1902 and now a cultural and educational center. The town center is compact; two to three hours are enough for a stroll with a lunch break. Lewisburg lies on Interstate 64, so getting here is easy.
