Lake Plastira

Neochori, Greece

Nature

A mountain reservoir in Thessaly ringed by wooded hills, with a road circling the shore and small villages and viewpoints along the way. Allow time to drive the loop slowly and stop at the lakeside tavernas.

Lake Plastira in the Karditsa region of Thessaly is a reservoir at 792 m above sea level. It is about 12 km long, up to 4 km wide and up to 60 m deep, with an area of around 24 km². Construction of the dam began in December 1955, and it was inaugurated in October 1960. The lake is named after the general and politician Nikolaos Plastiras, who suggested the idea after severe flooding in 1925.

The lake serves irrigation and power generation and is the main drinking-water source for the city of Karditsa. Thanks to its altitude and scenery it is also a popular excursion destination. Allow half a day for the drive around the lake and stops at viewpoints and villages. Because of the altitude it is usually cooler here than on the plain.
