Jackson Village

Jackson, NH

History

A small White Mountains village known for its covered bridge, with inns and a few shops nearby. Stop for photos of the bridge, then use the village as a base for waterfalls and trails around it.

Jackson's landmark is the Honeymoon Bridge over the Ellis River. Charles Austin Broughton and his son Frank built it in 1876 as a Paddleford truss bridge; it is one of the 55 surviving covered bridges in New Hampshire. It owes its name to newlyweds who had their photos taken here. The town was first settled from Madbury as New Madbury, was incorporated as Adams in 1800, and has been named Jackson since 1829 (as of October 2026; in 2021 residents voted that the name should honor the geologist Charles Jackson rather than President Andrew Jackson).

In the 19th century artists came to paint the landscape, and later boarding houses and large hotels appeared. The Wentworth Resort and the Eagle Mountain House are still in business. The Historical Society names Jackson Falls as a local attraction, and there is also hiking, golf and cross-country skiing. The bridge needs only a short stop; plan the village as a base for a day in the White Mountains.
