Hraunfossar
Húsafell, Iceland
A long line of small waterfalls that seep out of a lava field and flow into the glacial river Hvítá. Short paths and footbridges lead along the water, and the neighbouring Barnafoss is a short walk upstream.
Hraunfossar in the Borgarfjörður region of western Iceland consists of many small waterfalls that emerge over a length of about 900 metres from the Hallmundarhraun lava field. The name combines “hraun” (lava) and “fossar” (waterfalls). The water seeps out over ledges of less permeable rock and flows into the Hvítá river. The site lies near Húsafell and Reykholt.
Upstream is the Barnafoss waterfall. According to legend, two children fell to their deaths from a natural stone bridge over the river, after which their mother had the bridge destroyed. The two sites are easy to combine; allow about one to two hours in total. Watch for wet ground at the viewpoints.
