Hosios Loukas Monastery
Distomo, Greece
A Byzantine monastery on the slopes of Mount Helicon, known for its gold-ground mosaics and marble-clad church. Dress modestly, as it is an active religious site, and check the visiting hours before you go.
The monastery of Hosios Loukas lies on the slopes of Mount Helicon near Distomo in Boeotia. It goes back to the hermit Luke of Steiris, who died in 953 and whose relics are kept here. The Church of the Theotokos is believed to have been built under Romanos II (959–963), while the neighbouring katholikon is dated to 1011/12. Since 1990 the complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with Daphni and Nea Moni on Chios.
The katholikon is the earliest surviving domed octagon church; its mosaics are regarded as the best-preserved group from the Macedonian Renaissance. The crypt holds wall paintings considered the most complete Middle Byzantine programme. As the monastery is still in religious use, modest dress is advisable. Allow about one to two hours and check the visiting times in advance.
