The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

Dearborn, MI

History

A vast indoor collection of American vehicles, machines and everyday objects, from steam engines to presidential limousines. Allow several hours and consider the adjoining Greenfield Village if you have another day.

The museum in Dearborn was dedicated in 1929 as the Edison Institute and opened to the public in 1933. Today it is regarded as the largest indoor-outdoor museum complex in the United States. Its collection includes the 1961 Lincoln Continental in which President Kennedy was assassinated, the rocking chair in which Abraham Lincoln sat at Ford's Theatre, the bus in which Rosa Parks was arrested, and the Chesapeake & Ohio steam locomotive "Allegheny," one of the most powerful ever built.

Plan at least half a day for the exhibition hall, and more if you can. If you have a second day, visit the neighboring Greenfield Village, an open-air museum of about 240 acres (100 ha) with nearly 100 relocated historic buildings, including Henry Ford's birthplace. The Ford Rouge Factory Tour is also part of the offering.
