History

A museum on a hillside north of downtown with a large collection of art and artifacts of the American West and Native peoples. Combine it with the grounds and gardens, and allow at least two hours.

The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa opened in 1949 and displays the collection of oilman Thomas Gilcrease. According to the museum, it comprises more than 350,000 objects from North and South America, from 12,000 BCE to the present, and is among the most comprehensive collections of American art, culture and history.

The museum is currently closed (as of October 2026). The new building, with about 8,450 square meters (91,000 square feet), is scheduled by the museum to open in March 2027; until then the collection can be explored online.
