Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio
Oak Park, IL
The house and workplace where the architect developed his early Prairie-style ideas, in a leafy Chicago suburb. Visits are usually by guided tour, so book ahead; other Wright houses stand within a short walk.
Frank Lloyd Wright built the house in 1889 and lived and worked there until 1909. It consists of two connected buildings: the Shingle Style residence (428 Forest Avenue) and the studio added in 1898 (951 Chicago Avenue). Wright expanded the property several times. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1972, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, and since 2019 has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "The 20th-Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright."
The museum opened in 1974 and was restored over the following years until 1987 at a cost of about $2 million; it shows the property as it was in 1909. The house is run by the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust. Entry is by guided tour only; a tour lasts about 60 minutes, and the Trust recommends buying tickets in advance. Allow about two hours in total for the tour and the surroundings. Park on the side streets and walk.
