Flåm

Flåm, Norway

History

A small village at the head of Aurlandsfjord, known for its mountain railway down from Myrdal and for fjord cruises. Arrive by the road from Aurland or Gudvangen, and park near the harbour before taking the train or a boat.

Flåm lies at the inner end of the Aurlandsfjord, a branch of the Sognefjord in Vestland. The village has only about 300 inhabitants but receives almost 450,000 visitors a year (as of 2025). It is famous for the 20-kilometre Flåm Railway to Myrdal, which, with a gradient of 1 in 18, is one of the steepest standard-adhesion railway lines in the world. Flåm Church dates from 1670, and the Rallarvegen path links the village with Myrdal.

Flåm is part of the “Norway in Nutshell” tour package, popular since the 1980s. Since the pier was built in 2000, large cruise ships have been able to dock directly, around 160 a year (as of 2025); on those days it is noticeably busier. Allow half a day to a full day for the railway and the village, and if possible avoid the times when ships are in port. The ships’ exhaust emissions are criticised in this World Heritage fjord.
