Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt

Hyde Park, NY

History

The family estate above the Hudson where Roosevelt was born and later lived, with a house museum, rose garden and the presidential library next door. Walk the grounds to the river bluff after the house tour.

Springwood in Hyde Park is the estate where Franklin D. Roosevelt was born in 1882 and lived all his life. The house took shape between about 1800 and 1845 and was greatly enlarged in 1915–16 with fieldstone wings. The grounds cover several hundred hectares (roughly 800 acres or more). In 1941 the Presidential Library was dedicated here; in 1943 Roosevelt gave the house and land to the nation, and the National Park Service has managed the site since the mid-1940s. Roosevelt is buried in the estate's rose garden, with his wife Eleanor beside him.

Allow half a day for the house, the library and museum, and the rose garden. Eleanor Roosevelt's home, Val-Kill, is a separate National Historic Site some distance away, so you will need a separate trip to see it.
