Falls Park
Sioux Falls, SD
The Big Sioux River drops over pink quartzite ledges in the middle of the city, with paths and an observation tower for a close look. Come after spring rains for the most water; the old mill ruins add a photo subject.
Falls Park covers about 50 ha (123 acres) north of downtown Sioux Falls on the Big Sioux River, which drops roughly 30 m (100 ft) over steps of quartzite here. The ruins of the Queen Bee Mill, completed in 1881, were a seven-story mill built of Sioux quartzite; it closed by 1883 because water power and wheat were insufficient. The park also has the 1908 hydroelectric plant and the Quartzite Barn from the late 19th century.
A five-story observation tower is attached to the visitor center and looks out over the falls. The cafe in the old power plant is open daily in summer. Allow one to two hours; the park is close to downtown, so a visit combines easily with a stroll through the city.
