Fairhope Municipal Pier

Fairhope, AL

History

A small town on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay, with a long pier, a flower-lined waterfront park and shops on the streets behind. Walk out to the pier end for the bay view and stay on for sunset.

Fairhope lies on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay in Baldwin County, south of Daphne. The town was founded on November 15, 1894, by 28 followers of the economist Henry George as an experiment, a "single tax" colony in which the value of the land would benefit the community. In the twentieth century the town attracted artists and intellectuals, including Sherwood Anderson and Upton Sinclair. The Marietta Johnson School of Organic Education was founded here in 1907. The population grew from 590 in 1910 to 22,477 in the 2020 census.

The town center sits right on the bay. The Municipal Pier is about 1,448 ft (roughly 440 m) long; it and the waterfront park were renovated in a project costing a little over $10 million, completed in 2025 and formally rededicated in March 2026. Many visitors come for the sunset. An hour or two is enough for a walk along the pier and through downtown. Ask the city on site about parking for RVs.
