Eureka Springs Historic District

Eureka Springs, AR

History

A Victorian spa town built into steep Ozark hillsides, with winding streets, stone stairways and small shops and galleries. Park once and walk, as the hills are steep and parking is tight on weekends.

Eureka Springs began in 1879 as a spa town around springs reputed to have healing powers; more than 140 springs are known, though their flow has fallen sharply because of water withdrawal. The historic district covers most of the town (about 1,250 acres / 500 hectares) and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1970. Much of the architecture dates from the boom years between 1880 and 1910; besides Queen Anne and Second Empire façades, you will see Romanesque and Italianate details. Because of its steep slopes the town is nicknamed "Stairstep Town"; the streets wind around the hills, and many buildings are made of local stone.

Park once and explore the center on foot; the climbs are noticeable, so sturdy shoes are advisable. The Crescent Hotel, completed in 1886, is one of the best-known buildings. Plan two to three hours for a walk through town.
