Dom Tower
Utrecht, Netherlands
The tallest church tower in the Netherlands, rising over Utrecht's old centre, with a guided climb to the top for wide views. Book ahead for the climb and pair it with a walk along the sunken canal wharves.
The Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112.32 metres. It was built between 1321 and 1382 to a design by John of Hainaut and belonged to St Martin's Cathedral. On 1 August 1674 a tornado destroyed the unfinished nave, but the tower was left unharmed. Since then the Domplein has separated tower and church. The tower holds bells, among them the eight-tonne Salvator, cast by Geert van Wou in 1505.
The climb of 465 steps is possible on a guided tour. On a clear day the view reaches as far as Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Reserve your climb in advance and allow about an hour for the ascent and tour. Afterwards, a stroll along the sunken wharf-side paths beside the canals of the old town is worthwhile.
