Kościeliska Valley

Kościelisko, Poland

Nature

A gentle limestone valley in the Tatras, with a flat path along a stream, rock walls and caves such as the Mroźna cave. It suits families and gives a taste of the mountains without steep climbs; arrive early, as the car park fills quickly.

The Kościeliska Valley in the Western Tatras lies about 7 km from Zakopane and begins at the village of Kiry. The path along the Kościeliski Potok stream runs on a wide, gravelled track between limestone cliffs and meadows for about 5.5 km to the Ornak hut (an ascent of roughly 200 to 250 m; about 3 to 4 hours there and back). There are around 70 caves in the valley; Mroźna Cave is developed for visitors (opening depends on the season, so check in advance). Other destinations include the Mylna and Raptawicka caves, the Kraków Gorge (Wąwóz Kraków) and the pond Staw Smreczyński.

The valley lies within Tatra National Park and an entry fee is charged. The car park at Kiry fills up early at weekends, so come in the morning or later in the afternoon. Minibuses also run from Zakopane. Early summer and autumn are good times to visit. Horse-drawn carriages cover part of the route.
