Devil's Den State Park
West Fork, AR
A forested valley of sandstone crevices, small caves and a creek in the Boston Mountains. The Devil's Den Trail is short but rocky, so wear sturdy shoes and bring a flashlight for the crevices.
Devil's Den State Park covers about 2,200 acres (roughly 890 hectares) in the Lee Creek Valley in the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks. By its own description, the park protects the largest sandstone crevice area in the United States, with rock walls, overhangs and crevice caves. Starting in 1933, the Civilian Conservation Corps built cabins, trails and the dam on Lee Creek; the park is regarded as one of the best-preserved CCC projects in the country and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1994.
There are about 64 miles (100 km) of trails for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding, and the park offers campsites ranging from full hookups to tent areas, plus cabins. The trails are rocky, so sturdy shoes are a good idea. The caves have been closed to visitors since April 16, 2010, because of white-nose syndrome in bats (as of October 2026), so don't plan on a cave tour. Allow one to two hours for a walk among the rocks.
