Delft Market Square

Delft, Netherlands

History

The historic square of Delft between the Town Hall and the New Church, surrounded by canals and gabled houses. Walk the nearby canals and look for the blue-and-white pottery for which the town is known.

The Markt is the historic centre of Delft. On the square stand the town hall (Stadhuis) and the Nieuwe Kerk, built in the late 14th and 15th centuries. The church holds the crypt of the Dutch royal family. Delft received its city charter in 1246 from Count William II. In front of the church stands a statue of Hugo Grotius from 1886. The painter Johannes Vermeer was baptised in the Nieuwe Kerk in 1632.

The explosion of the gunpowder magazine in 1654 hit the city hard. The blue-and-white Delftware emerged in the 17th century, inspired by Chinese porcelain. You can climb the tower of the Nieuwe Kerk and look out over Delft from above. Afterwards, stroll along the canals. Allow about one to two hours for the square and its buildings.
