The Ceahlău is a mountain massif in the Eastern Carpathians, set within the national park of the same name, which covers around 290 km². Its highest summits are Ocolașu Mare at 1,907 m and Toaca at about 1,900 m. According to the park authority, the park has over 1,100 species of flowering plants as well as bears, wolves and chamois. Seven marked hiking trails open up the massif; several start at the resort village of Durău.
A popular destination is the Duruitoarea waterfall, at about 1,250 m, with a drop of roughly 25 m. From Durău, the trails marked with a red cross and a blue cross lead there on foot in one to two hours; a wooden staircase at the foot of the falls makes access easier. For summit circuits, allow a full day, start early and be prepared for changeable weather in the high mountains.
