Castelvecchio Museum
Verona, Italy
A fourteenth-century brick castle on the Adige turned into an art museum, with a fortified bridge beside it that you can walk across. Allow an hour or two; leave the car in a garage outside the centre.
Cangrande II della Scala had Castelvecchio built from 1354 on the right bank of the River Adige, incorporating the city wall, the Morbio Gate and the church of San Martino in Acquaro. The fortress was meant to control access to the city and the road to Trento. The main tower was completed in 1376. Between 1354 and 1356 the crenellated bridge was built, intended as an escape route towards Tyrol. It was blown up on 24 April 1945 by retreating German troops, like all of Verona's bridges, and was later rebuilt.
The castle has been the city museum since 1926. After the wartime destruction, Carlo Scarpa redesigned the interiors from 1958. The collection includes early medieval finds, 14th-century sculpture, Scaliger goldsmiths' work and paintings by Pisanello, Bellini, Mantegna and Veronese. You can cross the Adige on the bridge.
