Cañón del Río Lobos

Ucero, Spain

Nature

A limestone gorge cut by the Lobos river, with cliffs where griffon vultures nest. A flat trail leads from the visitor area to the hermitage of San Bartolomé; bring binoculars.

The Cañón del Río Lobos Natural Park was established in 1985, and two thirds of it lie in the province of Soria and one third in the province of Burgos. It is about 25 km long and covers roughly 9,580 ha. Griffon vultures nest on the limestone cliffs of the gorge, and you can watch them in flight and at their nests. Inside the park stands the Romanesque-Early Gothic hermitage of San Bartolomé, which in the 12th century belonged to the Templar monastery of San Juan de Otero.

Marked trails lead through the gorge, including the Sendero Ibérico Soriano and the Ruta del Río. The south entrance on the SO-920 road is the recommended way in, and another access runs along the SO-934. Binoculars are worth bringing for the vultures. Allow a few hours for a walk to the hermitage and back.
