Cáceres Old Town

Cáceres, Spain

History

A walled old quarter of medieval and Renaissance palaces, towers and churches in warm stone, preserved almost intact. Park outside the Plaza Mayor and walk in; it is most atmospheric at dusk when the lanes empty.

The old town of Cáceres in Extremadura was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1986. It combines Roman, Islamic, Northern Gothic and Italian Renaissance influences. The Romans founded the settlement around 25 BC, and the Almohads rebuilt the fortifications. Around 30 of the towers from the Muslim period still stand, the best known being the Torre de Bujaco.

Inside the walls stand noble palaces, fortified houses, churches and convents, most of them from the 15th and 16th centuries, many built by families enriched by Spanish expansion. They include the Gothic Co-Cathedral of Santa María and the Plaza Mayor. The setting was used for filming "Game of Thrones", among other productions. Allow two to three hours for a walk around. Park outside the walls and walk in; it is quieter in the evening.
