Bratislava Old Town

Bratislava, Slovakia

History

A compact pedestrian old town of Baroque palaces, small squares and quirky street statues, with the hilltop castle overhead. Park at the edge and explore on foot; an evening stroll is pleasant once the day crowds thin.

Bratislava's Old Town lies on the left bank of the Danube, overlooked by Castle Hill to the west. Its core is the area around the Main Square, with the oldest town hall in Slovakia; other squares include Hviezdoslav Square and Stone Square (Kamenné námestie). Sights include St Martin's Cathedral, Trinity Church, Michael's Gate, the Grassalkovich Palace, seat of the President, the Old Market Hall and remnants of the medieval city walls. Bratislava was first mentioned in 907.

The centre is compact and easy to explore on foot; three to four hours are enough for a first walk. Park on the edge of the Old Town and walk in. If you prefer it quieter, visit the lanes early in the morning or late in the evening, when the day-trippers have gone.
