Bom Jesus do Monte

Braga, Portugal

History

A hillside pilgrimage sanctuary reached by a monumental baroque zigzag staircase, with wooded grounds and views toward Braga. You can drive to the top or climb the steps from below; the climb is steep.

Construction of the sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte near Braga began in 1722 under Archbishop Rodrigo de Moura Telles; a chapel is already recorded on the site in 1373. The Baroque stairway climbs 116 metres in three sections with, by the commonly cited figure, 583 steps (other sources give slightly different numbers). The first section has chapels depicting the Passion of Christ, the second is dedicated to the five senses, and the third to the three theological virtues.

A funicular, the first on the Iberian Peninsula, has also run since 1882 and is still in operation. The sanctuary has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 7 July 2019. You can ride up to the top or make the climb on foot, which is steep.
