Bigăr Waterfall

Bozovici, Romania

Nature

A waterfall where the water spreads into fine threads over a moss-covered travertine lip, in the Cheile Nerei-Beușnița area. Part of the lip has collapsed, so it looks different from older photos; a short walk from the road leads to it, and shoes with grip help.

Bigăr Waterfall lies in Caraș-Severin County in south-western Romania, within the territory of the commune of Bozovici and in the Cheile Nerei-Beușnița National Park. It became famous for the way the water breaks up into fine threads over a moss-covered travertine ledge. The site also lies exactly on the 45th parallel north, halfway between the Equator and the North Pole. The waterfall's nature reserve covers 176.6 hectares and has existed since 2000.

On 7 June 2021 part of the waterfall collapsed: the weight of travertine and moss, which had built up over time, had destabilised the structure. The waterfall therefore looks different today from older photographs. Allow about one to two hours for a visit and wear shoes with good grip, as the ground can be damp. It is best to get up-to-date information on access and condition locally.
