Bernkastel-Kues

Bernkastel-Kues, Germany

History

A Moselle wine town whose market square is framed by leaning half-timbered houses, with the ruin of Landshut castle on the slope above. Climb to the ruin for the view over the vineyards and the river bend.

Bernkastel-Kues lies on the Middle Moselle, about 50 kilometres from Trier. On the old town's market square stand gabled half-timbered houses from the 17th century, the most striking being the narrow Spitzhäuschen ("Little Pointed House") of 1416. High above the town are the ruins of Landshut Castle, an archbishops' castle whose third phase of building began in 1277 and which was destroyed by fire in 1692. Today it serves as a viewpoint over the vineyards.

The town is shaped by wine growing, mostly on steep slopes; Riesling is the usual grape variety. On the other side of the Moselle, in Kues, the philosopher and churchman Nicholas of Cusa (Cusanus) was born in 1401; the St Nicholas Hospital, founded in 1451, commemorates him. Allow half a day for the market, the lanes and the climb to the castle. Sturdy footwear is worthwhile, as the path to the ruins is uphill.
