ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization
Sibiu, Romania
A large open-air museum in the Dumbrava forest outside Sibiu, with relocated mills, workshops and farmhouses from across Romania. Walk the loop around the lake and allow half a day.
The ASTRA open-air museum lies in the Dumbrava forest, about 3 km south of Sibiu. The museum traces its origins to an institution founded in 1905, and the open-air section opened in 1967. At about 0.96 km², it is considered the largest open-air museum in Romania. More than 300 houses and other structures have been moved here, including windmills from Dobruja, watermills, potters' and ironworking workshops, shepherds' houses and a wooden church from Bezded. The themed areas range from food production and transport to public buildings.
Two artificial lakes and around 10 km of paths invite a long circuit; allow half a day for a first impression and more to see the whole site. You can get there by car, bus or tram. The Folk Craftsmen's Fair takes place every year around the Feast of the Dormition in mid-August, when it is much busier; on quieter days the site is easier to explore.
