Anchorage Museum
Anchorage, AK
A large downtown museum covering the art, history and cultures of Alaska and the North, with a science centre and a good Alaska Native collection. A solid rainy-day stop before heading out of the city.
The Anchorage Museum opened on July 18, 1968. The glass expansion of 2009 was designed by David Chipperfield Architects; its facade uses about 5,900 m² (63,500 sq ft) of insulated, fritted glass. The museum has more than 3,700 m² (40,000 sq ft) of permanent exhibits, including galleries of art from Alaska and the circumpolar North as well as the Alaska Gallery on the state's history.
At the Smithsonian Arctic Studies Center, which opened in 2010, about 600 Alaska Native objects are on long-term loan from Smithsonian museums. The museum's collection holds about 25,000 objects and 500,000 historic photographs. The museum also houses the Imaginarium Discovery Center for science. Allow two to three hours. The museum is downtown, which makes it a good stop on a rainy day before moving on.
