Albarracín

Albarracín, Spain

History

A walled hill town of rose-coloured houses and crooked lanes above a bend of the Guadalaviar river. Park below the old town, walk the ramparts and arrive early to enjoy the lanes before the crowds.

Albarracín lies in the province of Teruel in Aragon, in a meander of the River Guadalaviar, surrounded by the Sierra de Albarracín. The name comes from the Berber Banu Razin dynasty, who made the town their capital from the early 11th century; in 1104 it was conquered by the Almoravids. From 1167 it was an independent lordship under Pedro Ruiz de Azagra. In 1284 Peter III of Aragon conquered the town, and in 1300 it was finally incorporated into the Crown of Aragon. It has been a national monument since 1961.

Fewer than 1,000 people live here today. The surviving townscape includes the town walls, the cathedral and a Carmelite convent. The surrounding area, with its red sandstone rock faces, is also popular with climbers. Allow half a day for a walk around. The lanes are quietest early in the morning.
