Vignettes and tolls: a country-by-country primer
Who charges by the kilometre, who wants a vignette, and what changes above 3.5 tonnes.

European motorways are paid for in three main ways: distance-based tolls at barriers, time-based vignettes, and electronic systems that read your number plate.
Vignettes
Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania use vignettes for cars. Most are now digital and linked to your plate. Buy them from the official sites before you reach the border.
Heavier motorhomes
Above 3.5 tonnes the rules change: Austria requires a GO-Box for distance-based tolls, and Switzerland charges a heavy-vehicle fee instead of the vignette. Check the maximum authorised mass on your registration document before you go.
