Route description

Start in Salem at the Salem Witch Museum, where life-size dioramas tell the story of the 1692 witch trials; October brings huge crowds, so go early in the day or pick another month. Boston is a short drive south, and its compact historic center is best explored on foot, with the vehicle parked outside the city.

I-95 continues south to Providence, Rhode Island, and then along the Connecticut shore toward New York. Around New York City many parkways have low bridges and do not allow trailers or commercial vehicles, so motorhomes should stay on the interstates; most bridges and tunnels charge tolls.

Cross New Jersey to the Jersey Shore at Margate City, where Lucy the Elephant, a six-story wooden elephant from 1881, can be toured up through her legs to the howdah on her back. From Cape May at the southern tip, the Cape May–Lewes Ferry crosses Delaware Bay to Delaware, a pleasant shortcut south.

From Lewes, the coast road leads to Ocean City, Maryland, with its long boardwalk, and just south of it lies Assateague Island National Seashore. Wild horses wander the dunes and even the campsites, so keep your distance, never feed them and store food securely. Book Assateague’s campsites early for summer and bring insect repellent.
