Route description
Leave Houston on US-59 north and spend the first night at Lake Livingston State Park, a wooded campground on a large reservoir about two hours from downtown. It is an easy start that gets you out of the city before the forest begins.
From Livingston, US-190 heads east through the pines past the Alabama-Coushatta reservation to the small county seat of Woodville. Here you turn south on US-69, the spine of the Big Thicket, where forest, pastures and sawmill towns alternate.
The Big Thicket National Preserve is not one park but a string of separate units. Pick up a map at the visitor center north of Kountze, walk the short Kirby Nature Trail and ask which units have trails open; the pitcher-plant bogs are best in spring.
End at Village Creek State Park near Lumberton, where you can paddle a slow, tea-colored creek between sandbars. Spring and late fall are the best seasons; summer is hot, humid and buggy, and fall is also hurricane season.
