Route description
From Mobile, drive south to Bellingrath Gardens on the Fowl River, at its best during the spring azaleas. AL-193 then crosses a long bridge to Dauphin Island, a barrier island with a bird sanctuary on the spring and fall migration routes.
At the east end of the island, Fort Gaines guards the entrance to Mobile Bay. Next to it, the Mobile Bay Ferry carries cars and RVs across the bay to Fort Morgan in about 40 minutes; check the schedule and length limits ahead, and note that it can be cancelled in rough weather.
Fort Morgan is a huge star-shaped masonry fort at the end of the peninsula. AL-180 then runs east past dunes and beach houses to Gulf Shores and Gulf State Park, with a large campground, dune boardwalks and miles of paved trails for bikes.
Return north along the eastern shore of the bay to Fairhope, a pretty town with a long pier and bluff-top parks. End at the USS Alabama and the submarine USS Drum on the causeway back into Mobile. Spring and fall are best; summer is crowded and hot.
