Chalk cliffs of Stevns and Møn

Route description

Leave Copenhagen south on the E47/E55 to Køge, a merchant town with a well-kept medieval centre, then take the coastal roads out to the Stevns peninsula. At Stevns Klint a path runs along the cliff top, and Højerup Old Church stands right at the edge where part of it fell into the sea.

Continue south and cross the Queen Alexandrine Bridge to Møn, arriving in Stege, whose Mølleport gate is one of the few medieval town gates left in Denmark. Then drive east through farmland and beech woods to Møns Klint, where the cliffs reach 128 m; steep stairs lead down to the beach, and the GeoCenter explains the geology.

Back on the mainland, Vordingborg has the Goose Tower and the grassy ruins of a royal castle. From here the Farø bridges carry the E47 across to Falster and Nykøbing Falster, a good end point or a stepping stone to the ferry at Rødby or Gedser.

Møn is a dark-sky area, so stay a night if the sky is clear. The roads are quiet and easy, but parking at Møns Klint is paid and busy on summer weekends; spring and September are the calmest times.
