Route description
Leave Bruges south-west across the polders to Diksmuide on the Yser, where Belgian troops flooded the land in 1914 to stop the German advance. Climb the IJzertoren for the view, and consider the Trench of Death just north of town, a preserved section of Belgian trenches.
The N369 heads south along the old front line towards Ypres. Stop at the German cemetery at Langemark, then drive the few kilometres to Tyne Cot, where the rows of white headstones climb the Passchendaele ridge.
Ypres was rebuilt stone by stone after the war; the Cloth Hall houses the In Flanders Fields Museum, and the Last Post is sounded at the Menin Gate every evening. Stay the night so you can attend without rushing.
Finish in Poperinge, a town just behind the lines where Talbot House welcomed soldiers of every rank; it is also the centre of Belgium’s hop-growing country. The area is small and the roads are good, so two days are enough, but it rewards a slow pace, especially around 11 November.
