Finistère: the capes at the end of Brittany

Route description

Leave Brest across the Plougastel bridge and follow the N165 and D887 onto the Crozon peninsula. Camaret, its chapel and Vauban tower lie at the end of the road, and just beyond, the Pointe de Pen-Hir looks out over the Tas de Pois sea stacks. Morgat and the beaches of the peninsula are good for a second night.

On the way out, take the small road up the Ménez-Hom for a view over the whole bay of Douarnenez, then drop down to Locronan, a square of grey granite merchants’ houses that has barely changed in three centuries. From Douarnenez the D765 and D784 run west through Audierne to the Pointe du Raz.

The last kilometre to the point is on foot from the paid car park; on a stormy day the sea boils around the lighthouses of the Raz de Sein. Head back east to Quimper for its cathedral and crêperies, then down to Concarneau, whose walled Ville Close sits on an island in the fishing harbour.

Some coastal car parks have height barriers, so motorhomes should use the aires in Camaret, Audierne and Concarneau. Spring and September bring fewer crowds and the clearest light.
