Route description
From Chicago take I-94 around the south end of Lake Michigan and I-196 north to Saugatuck, about 2 hours 30 minutes without traffic. Michigan is one hour ahead of Chicago, as it runs on Eastern Time. Saugatuck and its twin town Douglas are known for art galleries and a hand-cranked chain ferry across the Kalamazoo River that carries foot passengers to Mount Baldhead and Oval Beach.
Holland, 20 minutes north, was founded by Dutch settlers in 1847 and is famous for its Tulip Time festival in early May, when millions of tulips bloom and the streets are busy. Windmill Island Gardens has a working Dutch windmill. Holland State Park has a beach and the red lighthouse called Big Red at the channel to Lake Macatawa.
Continue north on US-31 to Grand Haven, with a long boardwalk along the river to the pier and its two lighthouses. North of Muskegon, US-31 runs inland; take the exits for the beach towns. Silver Lake State Park near Mears has dune rides and an off-road vehicle area where you can drive your own 4x4, a rare thing on the Great Lakes.
Ludington is a busy harbor town and the port of the SS Badger, a coal-fired car ferry that crosses Lake Michigan to Manitowoc in Wisconsin in summer. Ludington State Park, north of town, has campgrounds and the trail to Big Sable Point Lighthouse. The best season is June to September; state park campgrounds on this coast fill months ahead.
