Route description
Leave Copenhagen on Strandvejen, road 152, which follows the Øresund coast north past beaches, villas and small harbours. Traffic is slow in summer but the views across to Sweden make it worth it; the E47 motorway inland is the quick alternative. Louisiana, the modern art museum at Humlebæk, is about 35 km out, with its sculpture park on the shore.
Helsingør is 10 km further on. Kronborg Castle guards the narrowest point of the strait, where ships once paid the Sound Dues, and is the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Pay parking lies around the harbour. Ferries cross to Helsingborg in Sweden in about 20 minutes and run all day, if you want to add a short trip to the other side.
Follow road 237 west along the north coast through Hornbæk, with its long sandy beach, to Gilleleje, a fishing harbour at the northern tip of Zealand. From there head inland to Hillerød, where Frederiksborg Castle rises from its lake. The Museum of National History fills the rooms, and the baroque garden behind it is free to visit.
From Hillerød it is about 35 minutes south-west to Roskilde. The Viking Ship Museum is on the fjord, with five original ships and a harbour of replica boats, some of which you can sail in summer. Roskilde Cathedral, where Danish kings and queens are buried, is a short walk uphill. Copenhagen is 30 minutes away by motorway, making this an easy loop.
