Route description
Leave Madrid east on the A-2 to Alcalá de Henares, 35 km away. The university founded by Cardinal Cisneros, the birthplace of Cervantes and the long arcaded Calle Mayor make up a compact UNESCO old town that is easy to walk in half a day. Madrid has a low-emission zone that restricts older vehicles without a DGT environmental sticker, so check your vehicle before driving into the city.
From Alcalá, take the M-300 and M-311 south through farmland to Chinchón, about 45 km. Its Plaza Mayor is ringed by wooden balconies and is still turned into a bullring for festivals. The town is known for anise liqueur and garlic. Park at the entrance to the village, since the streets around the square are narrow and steep. From here Aranjuez is only 25 km to the south-west.
Aranjuez was the spring residence of the Spanish kings. See the Royal Palace, walk the Prince’s Garden along the Tagus and try the local strawberries and asparagus in season. The gardens are free and there is plenty of shaded parking on the avenues. Then take the N-400 west along the Tagus valley to Toledo, about 45 km.
Before entering Toledo, drive the Carretera de Circunvalación round the south of the Tagus gorge and stop at the Mirador del Valle for the classic view of the city. Then park in one of the car parks below the walls, such as Safont, and use the public escalators to reach the old town. Visit the cathedral, the synagogues and the El Greco works in Santo Tomé.
