Planning
The route was launched in 1950 and runs through Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Main stops include Würzburg, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen in the Ries crater, Augsburg, the Wieskirche and Füssen near Neuschwanstein. Travelling north to south, the Alps come into view at the end. Allow several days for a relaxed drive with walks in each town.
Camping
Numerous campsites and motorhome Stellplätze line the route. Many offer electricity, water and waste disposal. Fees and opening times vary, so check each operator or the municipality first. Outside designated areas, rules on overnight stays depend on the municipality. The ADAC Pincamp portal lists campsites and Stellplätze along the route.
Getting around
The route uses several federal roads, including the B2, B8, B16, B17, B25 and B290, so signs are the best guide. Park on the edge of the old towns and walk in. Most towns offer e-bike charging points. A seasonal Romantic Road coach runs from May to September. Check route details and operating dates on the official Romantic Road website.
