The route
The track runs from Marree to Marla on the Stuart Highway, about 620 km, passing Lake Eyre South, mound springs, William Creek and Oodnadatta. Most vehicles with good clearance manage it in dry weather, though conditions vary with grading and flood damage. It crosses the Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre region, Arabana country.
History and sights
The track follows the line of the old Ghan railway, which closed in 1980, so ruined sidings and bridges appear beside it. Algebuckina Bridge, built in 1892, is the most impressive. Mound springs, such as Coward Springs, are natural outlets of the Great Artesian Basin and support unusual plants and fish.
Preparing to go
Check the state road report, carry plenty of water, two spare tyres if possible, and tell someone your route. Lake Eyre National Park and the Simpson Desert need a Desert Parks Pass. Camping is available at Coward Springs, William Creek and Oodnadatta, and fuel is sold at Marree, William Creek and Oodnadatta.
FAQs
Do I need a 4WD for the Oodnadatta Track?
Not always. In dry conditions many high-clearance vehicles manage it, but a 4WD with good tyres is safer, and conditions can change quickly after rain. Check road reports and local advice at Marree.
How long does the Oodnadatta Track take?
Marree to Oodnadatta can be driven in about two days with stops, and the full track to Marla in three. Allow extra days for Lake Eyre flights, Coward Springs and any rain delays.
Is there mobile phone coverage on the track?
Coverage is very limited and mostly absent between settlements. Carry a satellite phone or personal locator beacon if you can, and leave your itinerary with someone.
