Before you go

  • There are two main bases, Green Mountains (O’Reilly’s) and Binna Burra. No road joins them directly, so plan around two hours of driving between the two.
  • Access roads are narrow, steep and winding, and unsuitable for long caravans and large motorhomes. Drive slowly and watch for wildlife.
  • Mist, cool air and rain are common, even in summer. Bring a rain jacket and sturdy shoes, and check current track and facility status, as the 2019 bushfires affected the area.

Two sides of the park

O’Reilly’s on the Green Mountains side has a treetop walk and rainforest tracks with many birds. Binna Burra, on the eastern edge, is the start of the Border Track, which links the two over about 23 km. Both sit among ancient Antarctic beech forest and waterfalls.

Nearby: Springbrook

Springbrook National Park lies on the same volcanic rim, east of Lamington. Natural Bridge has a glow-worm cave best seen after dark, while Purling Brook Falls drops more than 100 metres. Both fit easily into a day trip from the Gold Coast.

FAQs

How far is Lamington from Brisbane?

Both sides are roughly 90 to 120 km from Brisbane, about an hour and a half to two hours by road. The last stretch up the mountain is slow.

Can I take a caravan to Lamington?

It is not recommended. The access roads are narrow and steep, with tight bends. Leave the caravan at a park in the lowlands and make the trip in a car.
