Before you go

  • A park pass is needed to enter. In busy periods a shuttle bus runs from the visitor centre to Dove Lake, where parking is limited.
  • The Overland Track is about 65 km and needs a booking in the main season. Day visitors can walk the Dove Lake circuit or short tracks at Lake St Clair instead.
  • Snow, wind and rain can arrive in any month. Carry layers and waterproofs even for short walks, and do not rely on mobile coverage.

Cradle Mountain and Dove Lake

The northern end of the park is the busiest. A 6 km circuit around Dove Lake, mostly on boardwalk, takes about two hours and suits most walkers. The 1,545 m summit of Cradle Mountain is a rock scramble for experienced walkers in settled weather only. Wombats and pademelons are common near the valley at dusk.

Lake St Clair and the Overland Track

Lake St Clair, the deepest freshwater lake in Australia, lies at the southern end of the park, reached from the Lyell Highway at Derwent Bridge. Cynthia Bay has a visitor centre, short forest and lakeshore walks and a campground. It is a quieter alternative to Cradle Valley and the finish of the Overland Track.

Getting there and planning

Cradle Valley is about 80 km from Sheffield on sealed roads; Lake St Clair is on the Lyell Highway, which is narrow and winding. There is no direct road between the two ends, so allow most of a day to drive between them via Queenstown. Summer is warmest, and the deciduous beech turns gold in autumn.

FAQs

Do I need to book to visit Cradle Mountain?

A park pass is required for entry. Day walks generally do not need a booking, but the Overland Track does in the main season, and lodging in the valley fills early. Check the park's current rules before travelling.

Can I drive from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair?

Yes, but there is no direct road. You go via the Murchison and Lyell highways through Queenstown, a drive of about four hours. Fuel is limited on the way, so fill up before leaving the valley.

When is the best time to go?

Summer, from December to March, has the mildest weather and longest days. Autumn brings gold beech leaves, while winter snow suits experienced, well-equipped visitors only. Expect cool, changeable conditions in every season.
