A long mountain village at the foot of the Belianske Tatras known for its timber houses with decorated gables, kept in the Goral folk style. Stop for photos along the main street, then pick a trail into the hills.

Ždiar lies at 895 metres at the foot of the Belianske Tatras, about 34 km from Poprad and roughly three kilometres from the border crossing into Poland. First mentioned in 1409, the village was traditionally a Goral settlement; its people lived from farming, pasturing and charcoal burning, and from the late 19th century tourism was added.

A walk along the main road to the traditional timber houses is worthwhile; several hiking trails into the Tatras begin in the village. In winter there is the Strednica ski area on the edge of the village. Allow one to two hours for a stroll through the village, and half a day to a full day for hikes. The village is long and stretched out, so use the parking spots along the road for taking photos.
