The Comstock Lode boomtown, with wooden boardwalks, old saloons and mining museums along a steep main street. Drive up from Carson City or Reno, and look in at the Mackay mansion and the old mine tours.

The Comstock Lode was discovered in 1859 and made Virginia City a major mining center. In the 1870s tens of thousands of people lived here. A great fire in October 1875 destroyed 33 blocks of downtown. Virginia City is a National Historic Landmark. Samuel Clemens worked as a reporter at the Territorial Enterprise in the early 1860s and adopted the pen name “Mark Twain” here. Piper’s Opera House, in its present form from 1885, is among the best-known buildings.

The Virginia & Truckee Railroad has been partly restored. Today the town has fewer than 1,000 residents and lives from tourism. It sits on the slope of Mount Davidson and the streets are steep; wooden boardwalks, saloons and museums can be explored on a walk of two to three hours. The approach is from Carson City or Reno.
