A large park in Oslo filled with granite and bronze figures by one sculptor, centred on a tall column of intertwined bodies. It is an open-air park and free to walk, so come in the morning for quiet paths and good light.

The Vigeland Park lies within Frogner Park, Oslo’s largest public park at 45 hectares, which is open at all times. Gustav Vigeland worked on the installation from 1924 until his death in 1943: 212 sculptures in bronze and granite, the largest sculpture park made by a single artist in the world. At its centre is the Monolith, 14.12 metres high and made up of 121 human figures.

The 100-metre-long bridge is lined with 58 sculptures, including the well-known “Sinnataggen” (the angry boy), and opened in 1940. The fountain features 60 bronze reliefs, surrounded by a mosaic of 1,800 square metres. The park also has rose gardens with about 14,000 roses. With one to two million visitors a year it is one of Norway’s most visited sights. Come in the morning, when it is quieter, and allow about two hours.
