A fortified old town on a rocky headland above the Adriatic, with Ottoman and Venetian traces in its lanes and walls. Climb to the upper terraces at sunset for views of the coastline, and wear sturdy shoes for the uneven stone steps.

The old town of Ulcinj stands on a rocky peninsula on the Pristan Bay. At around 25 centuries it is regarded as one of the oldest urban complexes on the Adriatic, and it goes back to the Illyrians. The castle was renewed many times; Venetians, Byzantines, Serbs and Ottomans all resided here. You can see old fortification walls, medieval stone houses and the Balšić Tower, one of the most important medieval buildings in Montenegro.

The tower was built by the Balšić family, and the Ottomans later extended it. Today it serves as a gallery and for poetry evenings. Several buildings are used as accommodation. Allow one to two hours and wear sturdy shoes, as the stone steps are uneven. At sunset the upper terraces offer the best view of the coast.
