A national park of old-growth forest just south-east of Stockholm, with marked trails past lakes and moss-covered pines. The visitor centre at the village is a good start; bring insect repellent in summer.

Tyresta National Park lies about 20 km south-east of central Stockholm and was established in 1993. The national park covers around 1,970 hectares, and the whole protected area including the nature reserve about 4,700 hectares. It is one of the largest continuous areas of primeval forest in southern Sweden, with pines up to 400 years old. In August 1999 about a tenth of the national park burned; the forest has been recovering slowly since.

Marked trails lead through forest and rocky terrain; allow two to four hours for a walk. The park lies in the municipalities of Haninge and Tyresö. Traces of the 1999 fire can still be seen in the forest. Find out about trails and visitor facilities before you go.
