A Balkan foothill town known for woodcarving and Revival-era houses, with a clock tower on the main square and cobbled lanes lined with workshops. Allow an hour for a walk through the centre.

Tryavna lies at an altitude of 434 m on the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains near Gabrovo. The town has been documented since the 12th century; in 1190 the Battle of Tryavna was fought here, which was important in restoring Bulgarian independence from Byzantium. The typical architecture developed in the National Revival period: the ground floors housed craftsmen and traders, while the upper floors had wooden bay windows.

The art school continues to teach icon painting and woodcarving. In all, the town has around 140 monuments, museums and exhibitions. One hour is enough for a walk through the centre, or half a day with museum visits. Wear comfortable shoes.
