Water tumbles down seven stages through a wooded gorge, with stepped paths and bridges running beside the cascades. Wear shoes with grip, as the steps are damp and steep in places.

With a total drop of 163 m, the Triberg Waterfalls are among the best-known waterfalls in Germany; they are not the country's highest, as individual falls in the Alps are taller. The Gutach, which rises on the plateau near Schönwald, tumbles down several steps through the valley of Triberg in the central Black Forest. The upper section drops about 16 m, and the seven large cascades below it about 92 m.

Five entrances lead to the paths alongside the falls, some of them well built and paved. Car parks can be found near the town centre. Allow about one to two hours for the walk. The falls carry most water during the spring snowmelt and after heavy rain; in winter, ice formations appear in frost. Because of the wet, steep steps, non-slip shoes are advisable. In the evening the falls are lit at certain times.
