A small town at the end of a spur road, with log buildings, a local museum and, on clear days, a view of Denali from the riverfront. Stroll Main Street, and keep a clear day free if the mountain is your goal.

Talkeetna lies at the confluence of the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna Rivers, about two hours' drive from Anchorage. The town grew from 1916, when it became a district headquarters of the Alaska Railroad; in 1919 the railroad auctioned 80 lots. The town center is on the National Register of Historic Places, and early 20th-century buildings include Nagley's General Store, the Fairview Inn and the Talkeetna Roadhouse.

About 1,000 people live here, and the town serves as a base for Denali expeditions. Flightseeing, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, fishing and camping make up much of the local economy. A stroll through the center takes one to two hours; for flightseeing, set aside a day of its own and watch the weather. The cat Stubbs served as honorary mayor from 1997 until his death in 2017.
